So Frenchy oh SO Chic

Bonjour,

It has already been four years since Emilie Simon first came to Australia for performances in Sydney and Melbourne. Her show definitely left a huge impact on those who saw it, including this review by Bernard Zuel at the Sydney Morning Herald:

“Simon – who is probably known here only for this year’s (2007) JJJ favourite, Fleur de Saison, but has two very good albums of mostly original material released in France - makes every song an adventure visually and sonically. Sometimes it was a clattering drum sample turning a song from mellow to frantic or the piano wires being played by hand and drumstick.

Sometimes it was Simon's voice switching from angelic and high to devilish and low or the stooges' metronomic garage punk standard I Wanna Be Your Dog beginning as cute and compliant and then transforming into something subversively more dangerous than the original.

And sometimes it was Simon's percussionist smacking and splashing in a fishbowl half filled with water, the sound then sampled by her goth-clad electronic bloke and returned as a rhythm track throughout the song. Odd yes but it worked.

Simon’s mix of electronica, pop and a light touch of avant-garde was enlivened also by her relatively rudimentary guitar work. It cut jagged little holes into several songs, deliciously roughening pretty moments as she struck a guitar hero pose or two with a wickedly straight face.
Nothing was done without thought and structure, but nothing was felt over-manipulated. And when she finished the encore with a solo piano version of Nirvana’s Come As You Are, hairs on the back of necks were raised.”

Since her last visit, Emilie Simon has moved to New York and recorded her third album, The Big Machine, which has been enthusiastically described by several critics as a masterpiece. She comes back to Australia in late September for a double bill with Melanie Pain (the lead singer of Nouvelle Vague) who is equally renown for her stage presence. She will perform songs from her debut solo album, My Name, as well as some delightful surprises.
