GIRLBAR
CHAPTER ONE: COMMERCE CLUB
Girl Bar first opened its doors at the infamous Commerce Club in Melbourne's CBD on 21 October 1993. Our mission was to unite Melbourne's gayest clubbers at a time when segregated bars were all we had to choose from. In our own unique style we managed to create a truly mixed gay space which to this day continues to provide a safe & friendly enviroment for our sisters & brothers to party in.
Just 6 months after the Grand Opening, we had to relocate to cater for the evergrowing crowd. Girl Bar was off like a bride's nightie, so the search was on for a bigger and better venue...
CHAPTER TWO: McKILLOP STREET
On 19 April 1994, Girl Bar relaunched herself at McKillop St in the CBD. We were able to treat our patrons to 3 levels of entertainment and saw the first ever safe sex space for women in the club.
CHAPTER THREE: SUBWAY
In November 1997, we found a venue that out-classed any other. Subway, in St Kilda, included a Cocktail Lounge,Pool room, Dance arena, Cinema, Playpens and for those in the know the old Red Rattler! All this under one roof!
Unfortunately 2 years later, due to circumstances beyond our control we had to relocate yet again...
CHAPTER FOUR: THE PRINCE
Ironically, the Prince of Wales Hotel in St Kilda, which was the first gay venue for many of us in the form of the 80s club, 'Pokies', became the current home for Girl Bar. Refurbished with new bars and a huge balcony, the Prince continues as an exciting and exceptional venue for Melbourne's favourite women's nightclub.
